Wintering in the fjords

Winter transforms the mountains above Øye into some of the finest ski touring terrain in Norway. The peaks that frame the valley are accessible directly from the hotel, and the routes – from gentle ridges to serious summits – have been drawing skiers and climbers here for well over a century.

The hotel library holds the evidence: a Climbers Book that traces the expeditions of those who used Union Øye as their base, alongside one of the finest alpine collections in Norway.

On the right day, it is possible to ski from a mountain summit directly to the fjord and return to the hotel by boat – a journey that is difficult to find anywhere else, and one our guides know how to make the most of. Whatever your level, they will find the right route for you.

By the fire

When the weather closes in or the legs need rest, the house settles into its winter self. The meny fires in the house are lit, and time moves at a different pace. A game of snooker, an afternoon in the library, a long soak in the bathtub, or simply a drink by the fire with nothing pressing. Winter at Union Øye is as much about the warmth within as the cold outside.
